Verbal abuse in the workplace

I work at a tv station where I am in Sales. Over the past few months, my sales manager had periodically yelled and screamed to the point I would cringe of going in the office. I would subtlely make complaints, and nothing would be done, other than him saying if I did't like it quit. This past week, the verbal abuse increased when he called and literally cussed me out. I immeadiatley went to Human Resources and expressed my complaint.

The next day, I heard nothing. Then yesterday, I went to the station for a routine meeting and expected to sit down with the GM to discuss the problem. Nothing was said. Instead, three hours after I left, they called requesting me to come back and discuss not just that issue but now the customer complaints they had against me.

A red flag went up and I asked them for time to discuss this with some representation. Then they called back to say I wasn't entitled to have representation there and they mainly wanted to discuss the complaint against me, rather than the complaint I made. Seems as if since I caused a problem they found a problem with me.

Today, I was scheduled to meet to discuss the complaint against me...the complaint I made still hasn't been confronted and I wrote to them to say that the thought of coming there made me physically ill, because the idea of being around my sales manager makes me ill. Did I do the right thing?

I've talked to an atty and found that because there seemed to be no sexual harrassment, I have noting to complain about. How can employees have the right to do this to people? Is there anything that I can do? Please e-mail me....I love the job, but can't deal with the abuse of the manager.
